CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Petra Ral
Character Canon: Shingeki no Kyojin
History: wikia link
AU History:
Petra started out as a very old Phantump. Phantumps are said to be the spirits of children lost in the woods that have possessed rotten treetumps, and whether or not that is true to Petra is unknown. However, for a ghost Pokémon, Petra was always very social and gentle, often helping lost people find their way out of the forest rather than lure them further in instead.
One day she just woke up as a human, and it spiraled from there. It started with her running naked into town, finally being able to communicate and talk to these people (which ended terribly) but she was quickly informed of her mistake. Since then she'd sneak back and forth into the city by using her ghost powers (i.e. phasing through walls), until she met Levi. By "befriending" him, she eventually settled into the city for a bit, where he taught her various things about humans and their norms. Because of him, Petra ended up aiming to join the rangers, and also quit sneaking into the City as she actually started using the gates whenever she was granted permission to move between the outskirts and the city.
It’s been about three years since. Currently she’s a ranger living in the city, trying her best to help anyone in need and utilizing her skills as an Enlightened to do so. While she does have an apartment in the city, she prefers to stay in the forest along with her kind, though she enjoys staying her human body and form. She has no use for having Pokémon of her own, but she’s befriended an Oddish that stays with her in the city.
Being an old ghost-type, Petra’s been alive for a longer time than people realize. She hasn’t even realized it herself, but she’s watched the Union grow for many, many years.
Canon Personality:
Petra’s a strong character. She’s young and has a bright future ahead of her, yet she’s in a corps where 90% of the soldiers have died during the past four years. And she’s in there without any hesitation, not knowing whether she’ll live to see the next day. This is the life of a Survey Corps member, as Erwin asks the new recruits in the beginning:
“Will you be able to go die if you’re told to?” “We will not die, sir!”
To be able to honour these words, one must have a strong mind. But not only does Petra have a good mentality, but she’s skilled enough to be considered strong in power, too. She’s picked into Levi’s squad due to her high kill record, hers being the highest out of the four in the squad. She’s tiny, but that’s just practical when it comes to using the 3DMG. While Petra isn’t fearless, she’s not one to back down right away.
But other than that, Petra is a kind character. She looks out for her allies -- the first time we see her she’s helping out a fellow soldier, trying to make his bleeding stop. Petra’s stopped, landed on the ground in the middle of a titan invasion, in order to try to help someone whose bleeding makes it look like he’s long dead. Most soldiers wouldn’t take the risk to save someone, as landing or coming close often results in your own death. She also shows kindness to Eren when he first arrives, telling him not to be too frightened by Levi -- however, when Eren accidentally transforms, another side of her appears as she’s there, ready and prepared with her 3DMG blades like her other peers, prepared to cut off Eren’s head if she has to. This was what she was ordered to, after all. Be there to help kill Eren if he tried using his titan powers to escape. Petra’s a sweetheart, but still a soldier.
While Petra does seem to act nice and sweet to everyone, there is one person that goes on her nerves -- Auruo. With him, Petra bites. She snaps, she scolds, she elbows him in the gut. He just runs on her nerves, though this might also be because he’s trying to imitate Levi (and doing a bad job). Petra respects and admires Levi more than anything else, so Auruo really drives her mad, considering they seem to have known each other before Levi’s unit, and he “didn’t act like this back in the day”. She can be quite the sassmaster when the situation calls for it.
Like everyone else in Levi’s squad, Petra puts a whole lot of faith in the Lance Corporal. She stays true to his word nd wants to protect him above everything else. Petra’s incredibly loyal. One has to be, when in this branch. She holds trust very high, as proved when she realizes what Eren does for them, she wants them to get to a good relationship where he can learn to trust them, and them to trust him. While she succeeds in doing so, she keeps true to it until her death.
AU Deviation:
Petra will be more curious, as she’s Pokémon gone human. She’ll still be super loyal and gentle, like her canon self, with a small amount of the sass. As a ghost pokemon she’ll also be a little more mischievous and playful. Unlike her canon self, she can be more relaxed as she doesn’t lead a life depending on trying to survive everyday.
She's also a lot more naïve, as she’s yet to come to a situation where a human has horribly tricked her, attacked her or used her. Therefore she puts a lot of faith in the Union, and doesn’t really question the decisions made unless it’s completely awful -- she still understands the difference between good and bad. Sort of.
Canon Abilities:
Being a member of the Survey Corps, she must have gone through boot camp which gives her knowledge and at least somewhat skill in: Hand-to-hand combat, using rifles, manning canons and also using the 3DMG.
Enlightened Abilities:
Type: Ghost/Grass
Petra is a Phantump with Shifter abilities, eventually gaining a human form. In Petra’s shiny Phantump form she has golden eyes instead of the typical blue, like her canonverse human form. Her human form doesn’t have schlera eyes like Phantump does, but they glow in the dark. Llike her Pokémon form she has two branches sticking out of her head, though.
Other than that she looks and acts very human, due to effort. (She can forget simple things like opening doors instead of phasing through them.)
Skillset: Feint Attack, Leech Seed, Curse and Will-o-Wisp.
Starter Pokémon: Oddish
Notes/Special Considerations:
Petra is an old ghost Pokémon. She might have been around for things, which could be plot-related, but if not she’s long forgot them or not realized the information might be relevant!
SAMPLES
First-Person:
What do you feel your role in Union is?
I’m honoured to be a part of the Union, and their rangers. As a Pokémon I have learnt so much from humans, and I hope to be an ambassador of Pokémon as well. I hope I am as helpful to the Union as I believe I am!
To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness?
Could I say I would die again? --I’m sorry, that was a crude joke. It’s a ghost thing. But yes, I wouldn’t mind sacrificing myself for my allies. They deserve a long and fulfilling life, and I don’t mind doing anything to give it to them. However, I’ve been in this area long enough to be sure that were they lost I would easily be able to find and lead them home using my skills as a Pokémon.
A human has attacked a wild Pokémon who retaliates in defense. How do you respond and whom do you defend?
I will do my best to try and mediate the situation! I will not take any sides until I find the one at fault, but even then I’d rather not go all against them unless absolutely necessary. I want Pokémon and mankind to get along, much like brothers. Battle is not the only option.
You are alone and bereft of your Pokémon allies, upon what strengths do you rely on to see yourself safely home?
My instincts and knowledge of the surroundings. I’m a tough girl, I’ve been by myself for a long time before. I’ll be fine!
Third-Person:
What do you seek for humanity’s future?
Mutual understanding between Pokémon and humankind, as well as I’d love to see the human society grow, to see their technology grow and for them to expand their knowledge. I think the Gods have given mankind another chance to do this, and I hope to aid humanity into this bright, ideal future!
What do you look for in the Pokémon with whom you bond?
Trust and loyalty means a lot to me. Of course I would love to earn their respect, but it’s mostly important for them to be able to trust me, and for me to be able to trust them. I think this should be important for everyone bonding with Pokémon, though!
What do you do to ensure we never again awaken the wrath of the gods upon humanity?
Keep the peace! It’s very important for humans and Pokémon to understand one another, to become friends and treat each other as equals. I think that’s what the gods would want, and... I think that’s for the better, too.
When encountering a rare and powerful Pokémon, what is most important? Researching it, bonding with it, or defeating it? Why?
Of course, some research should be done, but most of all I believe trying to bond with it would be the best option. If it accepts us, their strength would be a great asset for humanity’s progress. Rare Pokémon are just a whole different level of powerful sometimes, and I’ve heard that some of them have long history, too. That’s why I’d like to add research, as well. But, bonding first!
In your eyes, what is absolutely unforgivable.
For me… I think, betrayal. Because I choose to trust everyone I meet, by my own will, I would be devastated if one were to break that trust. I think that it’s unforgivable to break anyone’s trust, if they’ve willingly given it to you.
What area do you seek to explore? The peaceful forest, in search of new, previously overlooked discoveries; the uncharted caves, in search of the unknown; or the wildest of mountain terrain, in search of danger, adventure, and thrills?
I have traveled lands for many years! I have walked through forests, ventured through caves and uncharted areas, but… I want to explore the city. The adventure of busy streets and bright lights and tall buildings. I’ve been outside the city for a while, so I think that for me I’ll find more adventure inside the city rather than the outside.
